The ORNL Metrology Laboratory is a part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a United States Department of Energy facility operated by UT-Battelle, LLC a partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute.
The ORNL Metrology Laboratory’s primary mission is to ensure the integrity of the research performed at ORNL through measurement capabilities traceable to national and international standards or intrinsic measurement values. The ORNL Metrology Laboratory accomplishes this through a carefully crafted quality system which ensures the adequacy of standards and measurement processes used in the calibration of measuring and test equipment used at ORNL. The ORNL Metrology laboratory voluntarily participates in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s / National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program. This program includes periodic and comprehensive assessments by NVLAP assessors to evaluate the effectiveness of the ORNL Metrology Laboratory’s quality program and the technical adequacy of the processes accredited under the NVLAP process.
The ORNL Metrology Laboratory is included in a network of DOE laboratories, other government laboratories and corporate organizations that pioneer the development of new and innovative measurement techniques and methods. The ORNL Metrology Laboratory actively participates with these partners through the National Conference of Standards Laboratories International, the Instrumentation and Automation Society and other professional organizations.
In supporting the extensive research activities at ORNL, the ORNL Metrology Laboratory maintains some of the most advanced measurement systems available. The ORNL Metrology Laboratory invests significantly in new equipment, to provide state-of-the-art measurement capabilities to the ORNL research community and other customers. Additionally, the ORNL Metrology Laboratory continuously pursues research and development of new measurement techniques to support anticipated requirements of the ORNL research community as well as the needs of external organizations.
