Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025

The ORNL Metrology Laboratory maintains a quality assurance program based on the International Standards Organization’s (ISO) standard ISO/IEC 17025.  ISO 17025 is a comprehensive standard that addresses the quality aspects of the operation of calibration and testing laboratories and is recognized internationally by both industrial and research organizations.  A properly implemented ISO 17025 quality program ensures the quality of calibration services by addressing the entire calibration process including organization of the management system of the laboratory, the training of the technical personnel, traceability and maintenance of standards, control of the laboratory environment, generation, technical requirements for a calibration, and maintenance of documents and handling of non-conformances.

Additionally, the ORNL Metrology Laboratory achieved accreditation to the requirements of the ISO 17025 standard, thus verifying the standard is wholly integrated into the daily operations of the laboratory.  The ORNL Metrology Laboratory maintains accreditation through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program(NVLAP)(Lab Code 200659-0).  The ORNL Metrology Laboratory is accredited in multiple calibration disciplines after an extensive evaluation including: on-site assessments, technical evaluations, and participation in proficiency tests.  Those accredited disciplines are clearly identified in the ORNL Laboratory’s NVLAP Scope of Accreditation and Certificate (Lab Code 200659-0). The ORNL Metrology Laboratory is ever expanding its accredited capabilities.

In addition to ISO 17025 Accredited calibrations, the ORNL Metrology Laboratory also provides calibrations in several non-accredited areas.  For those areas, the same quality system is utilized; however, the area has not been formally assessed for accreditation.  All calibrations are performed using NIST-traceable standards and will be provided with estimates of uncertainties.

When requesting a quote for calibration from the ORNL Metrology Laboratory, please specify whether or not an accredited calibration is required.
